our parakeet has a large tumor directly below her vent. it has been growing since january and is now about the size of an oblong ping-pong ball. we took her to a vet in february, and we decided against operating, since survival rates seemed slim. we have heard about goldenseal and bloodroot and were wondering if using either of them would be a good idea. she is still eating and drinking, but she has been at the bottom of her cage a lot for the past month. thanks so much for your advice. | ||

Oh, how miserable. I have had birds since I was a child, six at the moment. Parakeets are not very adventurous eaters but most of them love parsley. This helps to get oxygen to the tissues and should probably be offered fresh. I have occasionally gotten my keets to eat other very soft greens like basil or fennel, but they are usually timid about trying new things. Occasionally, of course, there is one that wants to eat everything you eat. It's hard to know what is going on, but a little medicated water might help. It sounds overwhelming huge so a sudden treatment might really shock her. I wouldn't be inclined to try bloodroot or goldenseal, at least not externally. I keep turmeric near my birds in case they bleed. It stops the bleeding quickly. Let me know how this goes. I just got off the phone with a vet. I can call her back and ask her about this also, but I really doubt she is going to have many suggestions. Keets are so fragile. | ||
