Hello,

My father was recently diagnosed with in-operable lung cancer. I was told that the cancer has not spread from his lung. He lives in Rome, Italy and my aunt (his sister) has taken him to several specialists and each specialist seems to contradict each other. My aunt does not know who to believe at this point. I went to Rome a few weeks ago and while I was there, the dr. gave him his first chemotherapy treatment. Less than a week later he started coughing up a lot of mucous. He had an infection in his lung (the infection may have been there before they started the treatment) and my father ended up in the clinic for a week to clear up the infection. My friend Jill Hansen told me to e-mail you and gave me your hardback book to read last night. My question is this...I would like to know if you know any doctor who specializes in cancer salve treatment in Rome,Italy? I am very concerned about my father because he has no appetite, due to the cancer, and needs to eat to build up his strength. I read about the pill Iressa and asked the dr. in Rome to try to get it for my father. The doctor in Rome got the okay from London and my father was approved for it (it supposedly shrinks tumors and brings back your appetite)however, I just found out that the dr. doesn't want to start my father on Iressa until September! Maybe you can't take Iressa while on chemotherapy treatments and that is why the dr. wants to wait. I'm hoping you may know someone in Rome who performs cancer salve treatments. I asked the one oncologist how long my father has to live and he said weeks/months.

Yikes,

First, it seems your father needs to assess his life, his options, and his wants and needs. If the oncologist has such poor expectations, your father truly has some difficult decisions to make. Were it me, I would say, "This fellow doesn't even believe he can help me so what I am doing here?" Everyone is, however, different. It's also possible that the oncologist told you this but your father is not in the loop.

Second, approving something for September when it is not even certain your father will still be alive in September seems a bit illogical. Obviously, no one is promising anything, but the question is always whether something no one is discussing might work or at least help with the appetite.

Many herbal remedies have entirely opposite objectives as chemo so the question of whether or not to use them is quite serious. So, while phytolacca syrup could help with the appetite as might galangal and/or ginger tea, no one really understands the contraindications for combining radically different approaches. Your father basically has to make the choices that seem right to him, and everyone has to accept the responsibility for the choices even if the ramifications aren't 100% clear. This is one of the truly difficult aspects of healing. We all want 100% success; we all want everyone to be well, but no one knows what will work and for whom.

God bless!
