I am having pain in my right side rib cage. My surgery was 20 months ago and I am worrying that the breast cancer has spread to the bones. I'm going for a bone scan in a couple of weeks. What will the bone scan show? If it's cancer or arthritis or pulled muscle will it be able to show the difference?

I don't think a bone scan will reveal soft tissue problems such as a pulled muscle. It should, however, show abnormalities in the denser tissue. Let's hope there is no metastasis.

Best wishes,

What so many patients forget is that they can make decisions about their treatment. Obviously, they are wise to confer with experts, but no one can force you to have treatment you do not want to have.

So far as the white blood cells go, they are obviously affected both by certain diagnostic tests as well as protocols. You can avert some of the worst disasters by taking supportive herbs, but again, you are better off utilizing the expertise of those who are experienced rather than muddling through on your own.

I hope the tests give you a clean bill of health.

I saw my oncologist for the results of the bone scan and she is 90% sure it is not cancer. A spot showed up on the sixth rib which had been radiated. I had more chest x-rays and I'm being booked for a cat scan. She feels I could have cracked the rib with coughing. I 've heard of that but I'm not in extreme pain. she said it could take up to 3 months for it to heal.
